Winter in Northern Ireland is no joke. Freezing temperatures, damp, wind, and frost can damage homes faster than you'd think. Getting ahead of winter maintenance now means fewer emergency call-outs when it's cold and you're desperate. Here's what you need to do before the bad weather hits.

Clear and check your gutters

Clogged gutters cause damage you can't see. Leaves and moss build-up stop water draining properly, which means it backs up and leaks into walls and foundations. In winter, that water freezes and expands, causing cracks. Clear them yourself if you're confident on a ladder, or get someone in to do it. While they're up there, check that gutters are properly secured and not sagging.

Lag your pipes

Frozen pipes are one of the most expensive winter emergencies. Any pipes in unheated areas — attics, basements, outside walls — need lagging (pipe insulation). It's cheap, takes minutes, and saves thousands if a pipe bursts. Pay special attention to pipes near external walls and under kitchen sinks.

Get your boiler serviced

A boiler service before winter means you'll know it's safe and efficient. Servicemen will check for gas leaks, test the safety controls, and clean components so it runs better. More importantly, if something's going to fail, it's better to know in October than in January when engineers are overbooked.

Draught-proof doors and windows

Cold draughts waste heat and energy. Check rubber seals around doors and windows — if they're cracked or missing, replace them. Weatherstripping is cheap and easy to fit. Don't forget the little gaps around pipes and cables where they enter the house. Use expanding foam or draught-stopping putty.

Prepare your garden

Bring in garden taps if possible, or cover them with insulation to stop freeze damage. Drain hosepipes and put them away. Check that garden walls and fencing can handle winter wind — loose panels or cracked walls should be sorted now, not during a gale.

Inspect your roof

Look for missing, cracked, or loose tiles. If the roof's leaking, you want to know before winter rain and snow start. Check flashing around chimneys and valleys where water pools — these are trouble spots. From ground level, use binoculars if you're not comfortable on a ladder.

Check for damp in walls and basements

Winter's the worst season for damp problems. Look for signs of moisture — discolouration, a musty smell, or peeling paint. If you spot something, fix the source now. It's usually poor drainage, missing guttering, or cracked mortar. Left untreated, damp causes serious structural problems and health issues.

Test your heating system

Switch on the boiler and radiators, even if you don't need the heat yet. Make sure all radiators warm up properly. If some are cold or the system's sluggish, you might need a powerflush or bleeding of air from the system. Better to sort it now than when temperatures drop.
